Hello, I’m Shahin Sabouri, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS). I migrated to the US in my early 30s, I learned to connect with my new country men and women through bridges which were based on essential human characteristics such as validation, respect and trust. These are the values that I bring to my practice today. Outside my work, I enjoy connecting and spending time with my family and friends. I love to cook, read novels and spend time with my girlfriends.
I received my M. S. in Rehabilitation Counseling & Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill, and B.A. in Psychology from NC State University. I have clinical experience working in different settings such as private practice and working with Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT). I have also worked in a large teaching hospital (UNC) for several years as a psychotherapist and Clinical Instructor, treating young adults with prodromal symptoms of psychosis. I have witnessed and have understand how stress, anxiety, and depression could mimic symptoms of psychosis and vice versa.
I work with individuals coming from different ethnicities, race, gender and ages. I work with multicultural populations. Something else that makes me unique is my fluency in two additional languages: Farsi and Azeri.
I like to leave some time to give back to my community, I believe in volunteerism and advocacy for people with severe and persistent mental illness. I also volunteer for Red Cross and women’s shelter. People usually remember my upbeat attitude and comment on my extraordinary attention to details.
My work is primarily based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing, but I also draw upon Evidence-Based practices such as Mindfulness, and Somatic Experiencing Therapy.
I am trained and certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I believe that each and every individual has the potential to lead a happy and meaningful life. I hope to provide a safe environment for my clients in which they can be heard.
