Hello. My name is Stephen Hughes and I have been a licensed therapist for more than 20 years. I am easy to talk to and genuinely concerned with my client’s well-being. I have worked with many individuals in many different settings over two decades. I strongly believe in meeting people where they are and help them get where they want or need to be. I strive to be supportive yet challenging when needed. I try to find the common ground with my clients and build a therapeutic relationship from that foundation, knowing that we are all in this together, and no one is alone in their travels.
I enjoy spending time with my wife Tammy of 24 years with whom we take care of two rescue dogs, Grendel and Scarlett. We all enjoy traveling and especially cruising. We have lived in Clayton for nearly ten years and have enjoyed living in North Carolina immensely.
I am a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor. I also obtained licensure as a Professional Clinical Counselor in Kentucky. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Eastern Kentucky University and later earned my Master of Arts degree in Community Agency Counseling from Marshall University. I have been practicing in the field of mental health for over twenty years, providing a variety of services such as individual, group, family and couples counseling. The majority of my early experience was with adolescents issues, stress management, grief/loss issues, trauma and abuse, especially those in foster care settings.
For the last five years, I have focused on treating adults with a variety of issues. As a licensed psychotherapist, I work with individuals, couples, and families from diverse cultural backgrounds dealing with emotional difficulties, relationship problems and various psychological conditions. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders. My goal is to help my clients define what they truly want, and then help them manage the obstacles that get in their way. I explore symptoms and concerns in the context of your personality, your history, and patterns in how you have come to deal with your feelings. I believe change occurs in therapy as you begin to understand unconscious patterns in the way you think, feel, and relate to others. Psychotherapy helps in managing your feelings, making better choices, and removing the obstacles to your goals.
I draw from multiple styles or methods to tailor my approach to you specifically. Cognitive-Behavioral, Gestalt, Reality, Solution Focused, Exposure Therapy, and others to engage you in a way that will be most effective. Humor and warmth are a part of my character and is always part of my therapeutic relationships. I work hard at being myself and not aloof or too clinical, always hoping that you will see me as a guide and ally to help you change in ways that are productive for you. I am usually accessible for crisis support and will always do my best to help my client in their time of need.
I offer in-office and video counseling or Teletherapy (please check with your insurance if teletherapy is covered in the outpatient therapy benefits or you can choose to private pay).
Please note, clients are responsible for calling their insurance to verify insurance benefits for Outpatient Therapy (in-network or out-of-network benefits if Wake Counseling provider is not in-network with your insurance plan). Here are commonly accepted plans by this provider:

Aetna (credentialing pending/out-of-network)
Out-of-Network Insurance: I can provide a “Super Bill” or an Invoice for client to submit to their insurance for reimbursement. Client is responsible for verifying out-of-network benefits with their insurance plan.

Private pay, fee schedule is as following for psychotherapy session:
Initial Assessment/Consultation - $150
45 minute session - $90
45-60 minutes - $120
* There will be $50 no-show/late cancellation fee for missed appointment on weekdays & $90 no-show/late cancellation fee for weekend appointment unless cancel appointment 24 hours in advance.
