ABOUT ME

My name is Mya Hooks and I use she/her pronouns. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA) in North Carolina. I have a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Appalachian State University and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wingate University. I have been interested in pursuing a career in a profession where I can support others since middle school. Along with my interest in wanting to support others, I enjoy crime documentaries, traveling, and spending time with my very spoiled fur babies.

EXPERTISE

I began my professional career as a Therapeutic Day Treatment Counselor working with adolescents with mood disorders and ADHD. I have provided clinical services to adults in a substance abuse intensive outpatient program. I work with individuals, couples, and families.

In the past five years I have gained significant experience working with college students with anxiety, depression, and ADHD. I know how hard it can be transitioning from one stage of life to the next, so navigating life transitions has been a major part of the work I have done in supporting individuals. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I work with families and couples struggling with communication issues, problem solving, improving relationship with their partner and/or with other family members including children.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

As humans, we are part of many systems from our colleagues, families, friends, and romantic partnerships, all of these relationships play a role in how we engage in the world. I truly value the experiences of others and recognize that all aspects of one’s life are interconnected. Supporting people as they navigate the various systems, they are part of is important because it has a profound impact on how we experience the world.

I focus on supporting clients in taking ownership of the changes they would like to see, the choices they make, and the lives they would like to lead. Collaboration with a client to identify the goals that are important to them can assist with creating a more lasting change. I make it a priority to create a safe and welcoming space for clients to feel empowered, build healthy coping strategies, and increase confidence.

I use a variety of modalities in my approach such as cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, systems theory, coaching, and mindfulness techniques.
