Angelyn Fanlo, LCMHC, LCAS

Hello! My name is Angelyn Fanlo (pronouns: she/her/hers) and I have graduate degrees in clinical counseling (Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor) and Public Health Education from East Carolina University. I was born in Granada, Spain to a Spanish father and a Filipina-Chinese mother. I spent most of my childhood in Spain, Philippines, and Hong Kong; however, I lived here in North Carolina for most of my adult life!

Growing up in a multi-cultural household has given me an opportunity to see the world from different cultural lenses. I consistently strive to be a culturally well-rounded individual by immersing myself to other people’s cultures and learning their ways of life. I am also a strong advocate for LGBTQIA rights and especially with ethnic minorities. I strongly believe that we all have equal rights for better treatment regardless of religious, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ethnic backgrounds.

EXPERTISE

I have been privileged enough to have worked with individuals of diverse backgrounds and have worked in different settings in providing psychological care for mental health and substance use issues. I have worked extensively in community mental health and have worked closely with individuals of various socioeconomic backgrounds. In the past clinical work, I have worked in a private practice, hospital, and local university counseling center both as a preventionist and as a psychotherapist.

I also enjoy working with individuals who have been struggling in various phases of their lives. These include the loss of a loved one, separation or divorce, and adjusting to college life, as well as other mental health disorders. My goal is to make you feel comfortable, heard, and not feel judged for whatever you bring to me. I stand behind every person I work with so as to empower them in making healthy decisions.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

I provide a safe space for everyone to be seen and heard while empowering their ability to reach established goals by overcoming barriers and accessing their own unique strengths. I do this by incorporating mindfulness practice and addressing any maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that may be interfering with the person’s functioning and/or quality of life. Within this approach, I emphasize the impact of issues of identity related to gender, sexuality, culture, and family.

I take an integrative approach to treatment utilizing cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, motivational enhancement therapy, rational-emotive behavioral therapy, and relational-cultural techniques in order to draw from client strengths and fostering a strong therapeutic alliance to provide affirming, engaging, and evidence-based psychotherapy and intervention. I also have a background as a professional harpist. I have my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and incorporate harp music into some of my clinical work, including guided imagery, sensory processing, relaxation and mindfulness exercises.

I view the counseling process as a collaborative approach between me and my client and that there is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy. The counseling process is progressive and everyone has a different therapeutic experience and results may vary from one person to another.
