ABOUT ME

Greetings! My name is Chantelle Irankunda. I am originally from East Africa, Uganda and I have lived in Raleigh, NC since 2008. I received my Bachelor's degree in social work from East Carolina University and I am currently working on getting my Master's degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University. During my time at ECU, I volunteered at the Pirate Academic Center as a success coach. As a success coach, I worked with first year students weekly assisting them with transitioning from high school to college life by aiding them in strengthening academic study skills, developing effective study habits, learning to use graphic organizers, fostering connections to academic resources, and effectively managing time.

EXPERTISE

I am interested in working with children, teens, adults 60+ to gain more clinical experience working with children utilizing play therapy, art therapy during internship. I would like to gain the skills of working with women, men, adolescents, and LGBTQIA+ on a wide variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, academic problems, life transitions, couples and marital problems, trauma, and ADHD/ ADD.

I’m currently working with Abound Health as a Direct Professional Support to individuals with disabilities. I work on empowering, providing tools and services people need to enhance their lives and the lives of others.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

I plan on using different types of therapy and blending them to personalize your care. I will work from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Strength-Based, psychodynamic, and systems-theoretical approaches and use modalities that include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), solution-focused brief therapy, Miracle question, family systems therapy, Experiential therapy, psychotherapy, and couples therapy.

My experiences that have led to my passion for social work include coming to the United States as a refugee at age eight, starting school in the third grade in the U.S. with no formal education prior, enduring extreme poverty in Africa and the U.S., being a survivor and witness of domestic violence, and a daughter to a mother and father with zero educational background. I found a way not just to survive, but to thrive in the midst of these circumstances. These experiences, along with strong ethics and values, provide an excellent background for empathy and understanding of what my clients are experiencing. I believe we are all uniquely different and have our own stories to tell. As a social worker intern, I am there for my clients to listen and understand their life experiences while utilizing different counseling approaches to uplift and help them thrive!
