Hello, I am Chethana Perera. I live in Cary, NC with my husband and two daughters (oldest in college & youngest in middle school years), and our wonderful 4-year-old Lhasalier, Bella.

I am originally from Sri Lanka, a beautiful little island in the Indian Ocean. I have lived in NJ and MA before relocating to Cary, NC in 2013. I feel immensely blessed to have had the opportunity to experience and embrace the best of various cultures. I am a voracious reader, a coffee lover and big on self-care for myself and others around me. I value autonomy, individuality, and the diversity we all bring to the table through our different lived experiences.

EXPERTISE

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina, and received my Bachelor and Master of Social Work from North Carolina State University. In Sri Lanka, I worked with people challenged with mental health and behavioral issues, suicidal ideation, and mood disorders. My most recent clinical experience was with individuals in an inpatient hospital setting, where I provided both individual and group therapy for patients challenged with neurocognitive disorders, severe and persistent mental illness, mood and personality disorders and substance use disorders.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

My counselling approach is based on the premise that the client is the expert on their life. I strive to provide a safe, supportive partnership towards achieving a better quality of life.

Utilizing a “person in environment” approach (we are never just the one person or an “issue”, but a combination of family, society, economy, history, genetics, etc.) together we would explore risks, strengths, and protective factors. And, depending on situation, presentation, and personality, I would utilize tools from therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy( ACT), Behavioral Activation, Mindfulness based Therapy, Grounding Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Trauma- Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing).
