ABOUT ME

I am a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS) with Ph.D. in Educational Psychology.  I began my educational journey at Shaw University, majoring in Recreational Therapy and minoring in Psychology.  Upon graduating from Shaw University, I worked as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist at Rex Wellness and Personal Trainer at Gold’s Gym.   After establishing myself in the allied healthcare field, I began working part-time as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QP) with the school age and teenage population, in the Community Based Services (CBS) sector.  Within five years of working fulltime as an Exercise Physiologist / Personal Trainer and part-time as a Qualified Mental Health Professional, I enrolled into a Master of Science (MS) Clinical Psychology program at North Carolina Central University (NCCU).  Shortly after beginning my MS at NCCU, I was accepted into Walden University’s Psychology Doctoral program and transferred.  As part of my doctorate program, I acquired a MS in Clinical Psychology.  My Psychology Doctorate program was with a concentration in Education.  During my doctoral program I was privileged to complete residencies in Barcelona, Spain; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and San Diego, California where I enhanced my cultural diversity skills.  In 2015, I was hired and added to Wesleyan University’s Psychology Department as an adjunct professor.

Motorcycle riding, exercising, and movies are a few of my favorite hobbies.

EXPERTISE

During my early years in the field of mental health, I primarily worked with the school age and adolescent population within the community-based sector.  There I gained experience with disorders including - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Generalized Anxiety, Cyclothymic Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Intellectual Developmental Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Throughout my career in mental health and addictions, I have acquired other national credentials including in Certified Professional Life Coaching (CPLC), Certified Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), and Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP).   After obtaining my MS in Psychology I developed expertise in the private practice sector working in Outpatient Therapy and enhanced services such as Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) and Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment (SACOT).  There I gained a great deal of knowledge working the adult population; treating a wide range of co-occurring diagnosis such as depression, bipolar, anxiety, and trauma related disorders; with addictions including alcohol, opiates, marijuana, stimulants, gambling, and prescription medications just to name a few.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

In recognizing that individuals are not separated by their mental, physical, and spiritual health but interdependently connected by them.  I am most notable for approaches including: solution focus, person-centered, mindfulness-based, reality therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapies to address the whole person rather than just one isolated health component.  My nonjudgmental methods to therapy will empower individuals while promoting mindfulness.  Therapy is a learning experience for both the client and the clinician; hence we take a collaborative attitude to treatment.  My role is to assist you in reaching whatever goals you may have for yourself and identify what success looks like to you.
