ABOUT ME

Hello to the beautiful soul taking the time to get to know me a little. My name is Mamie Smith, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Associate. I grew up here in North Carolina - home of indecisive weather, sweet tea, and crickets that sing on summer nights. I also received both my Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Social Work from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. I am a wife, a cat mom, and a self-proclaimed certified southern cook. In my free time, I enjoy the peace of the beach, thought provoking podcasts, and a good play or comedy show, because laughter truly is medicine to me. I believe in the golden rule of treating others how you would want to be treated. I also believe that taking steps to heal your mind and heart is extremely brave and essential to a better quality of life.

EXPERTISE

I started my clinical career working with children and adults 10-18+ with substance use disorders. I engaged in therapeutic individual and group settings for a non-profit that focused on prevention and using self-identified strengths to provide avenues of growth. I then transitioned to working with pregnant and post-partum women suffering from substance use and mood disorders, including prenatal and postpartum depression. I continued my clinical work with Intensive-in-home therapy for families and individuals dealing with multiple mental health disorders and societal challenges that lead to the need for added support. I assisted clients dealing with everything from anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, bullying, family conflict, truancy, depression, divorce, anger management, unexpected employment changes, and unpredictable life stressors that caused various emotional and mental health concerns. This journey has allowed me to cross paths and support people from all walks of life from all ages, all communities, and various unique backgrounds. It is my hope to continue to grow in this field and provide a safe space for those seeking solace.

COUNSELING APPROACHES

The foundation of my clinical work is a patient-centered approach, which means I support the client being the driving force of care and treatment. I also believe that treatment goals should be created around an individual’s personal goals for growth with the potential for healing. I do my best to meet clients where they are and attempt to support them to get to where they want to be. I have used multiple theoretical methods in my work, including motivational interviewing, solution focused brief therapy, ACT (acceptance and commitment theory), CBT (cognitive behavioral theory), BT (Behavioral Theory), and non-traditional approaches, such as breath work and guided meditations. I continue to use practice knowledge and educational opportunities to grow my skill set to better serve those I am privileged to provide support too.
